What’s one place you could visit over & over?✨ What’s one place you could visit over & over?✨

For me I think it would have to be Croatia. Specifically Dubrovnik. I got back from my 2nd time there a month ago & I miss it so much already, I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The old town is such a magical place. The narrow streets, terra cotta rooftops, and stunning medieval architecture makes me feel like I’m stepping back in time. Every visit to Dubrovnik feels like a new adventure, filled with history and breathtaking sights at every turn.

Have you had the chance to visit the Pearl of the Adriatic?

Know Before You Go

Before embarking on your Santorini adventure, here are a few essential details to keep in mind.

Official language: Greek

Currency: Euro. €1 is equal to about $1.50 CAD

Plugs: The standard plugs in Greece are type C and F, with a voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz.

Safety: Greece is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. The violent crime rate is low, and incidents are rare. However, like in many tourist destinations, petty theft such as pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas and tourist hotspots.

When to Visit

For warm, sunny weather, the best time to visit Greece, including Santorini and the rest of the Cyclades, is from May to October. July and August are peak tourist months, with high prices and crowds, and Santorini gets very crowded. To avoid the busiest periods and potentially save money, consider visiting in May, June, September, or October.

Staying Connected

Staying connected while traveling is essential these days and the cost to use Canadian cell phone plans while abroad is insane. While visiting Greece I used an eSIM, specifically Airalo. They offer a variety of affordable data plans in countless destinations. You can purchase and activate the eSIM directly from your smartphone, so you don’t have to worry about removing your original SIM and keeping it safe throughout your travels.

Airalo eSIM ensures seamless connectivity, and with iPhones even allows you to keep your usual phone number for iMessaging. Simply download the Airalo app, browse available plans, and activate your eSIM to stay connected to the people and things that matter most during your travels.

Getting There

Santorini is accessible by ferry or plane. Ferries depart regularly from Athens’ ports, as well as from other nearby islands in the Cyclades. Alternatively, you can fly into Santorini Airport(JTR) from Athens or other major European cities.

Local Transportation

Once you’ve arrived on the island, getting around Santorini is relatively easy. Local buses, taxis, and rental cars are available, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

For a more scenic journey, consider renting a scooter or ATV to navigate the island’s winding roads and stunning landscapes.

Things To Do

Hike from Fira to Oia

This scenic trail offers stunning views of the caldera, charming villages, and iconic blue-domed churches along the way. At 10.5 kilometers along a mix of sidewalk, stairs and cobblestone, this journey will take you approximately 3-5 hours.

Explore Skaros Rock

Protruding from the Aegean Sea in front of the village of Imerovigli, Skaros Rock is a popular spot for hiking and photography. There’s a path leading from with village down to the rock.

Venture down to Ammoudi Bay

Descend the steps from Oia to Ammoudi Bay and discover a hidden gem nestled along Santorini’s rugged coastline. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the bay’s charming tavernas or take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters.

The journey back up is a rough one, but don’t be tempted to take a donkey ride – they’re very mistreated.

Indulge in the shopping

Explore the charming streets of Fira and Oia, lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and quaint cafes. Discover unique souvenirs, handmade crafts, local specialties, and trendy clothing items.

Watch the iconic sunset over the caldera in Oia

No trip to Santorini is complete without witnessing the legendary sunset over the caldera in Oia. Join the crowds gathered along the cliffs, sip on a glass of local wine, and marvel at nature’s spectacular display as the sun dips below the horizon.

In the summer, sunset takes place at about 8:30pm. To avoid navigating through the crowds, aim to arrive around 6pm to find a good spot.

Relax on Perissa Beach

Spend a chill day soaking up the sun on Perissa Beach, one of Santorini’s most popular black sand beaches. Swim in the crystal-clear waters, unwind on a sun lounger under the shade of an umbrella, and enjoy some drinks from the beachfront bars and tavernas.

Where to Stay

Santorini is a much bigger island than people expect. With its diverse landscapes and vibrant villages, choosing where to stay in Santorini depends on your preferences and itinerary. Whether you prefer the relaxing beaches of Perissa, the lively streets of Fira, or the romantic ambiance of Oia, there’s accommodation to suit every traveler’s needs.

Perissa

Consider staying in the beachfront town of Perissa. While there isn’t much to do on this side of the island, you’ll find some great pricing on accommodations. Book a room at the Porto Perissa Hotel for easy access to the island’s volcanic black sand beaches.

Fira

Located on the western side of the island, Fira is where you’ll find all the hustle and bustle of Santorini. For budget-friendly accommodations in the heart of Santorini’s capital, check out Bedspot Hostel Fira, offering comfortable dormitory-style rooms and a central location close to shops, restaurants, and nightlife.

Oia

This small but beautiful village is the most expensive area to stay on Santorini. Immerse yourself in the charm of Oia without breaking the bank by staying at the Central Hostel Oia, conveniently located just steps away from the bus station and within walking distance of all the town’s popular attractions.

Where to Eat

Santorini has no scarcity of authentic Greek and Mediterranean dining. Here’s my list of restaurants that you should try on the island!

Karma – Treat yourself to a delightful breakfast experience at this charming eatery in Oia. With a tempting array of Greek specialties, Karma promises to satisfy your cravings and set the perfect tone for a day of exploration in Santorini.

Sunset Ammoudi Fish Restaurant – Indulge in fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine at Sunset Ammoudi Fish Restaurant, nestled along the waterfront in Ammoudi Bay.

Gelateria Ammoudi Bay: Enjoy artisanal gelato flavors at Gelateria Ammoudi Bay. Situated by the waterfront in Ammoudi Bay, this charming gelateria offers classic and exotic flavors to satisfy every palate. Treat yourself to a cone or cup and take in the stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

Piatza Souvlaki Grillhouse –  Craving a late night or afternoon snack? Head to Piatza Souvlaki Grillhouse in Oia for mouthwatering souvlaki, gyros, and other Greek street food favorites.

Poseidon: Enjoy fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine with panoramic views at Poseidon. Located on Perissa Beach, this beachfront restaurant specializes in dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Pair your meal with Assyrtiko wine for a memorable Santorini dining experience by the sea.

Where to Have Drinks

Deilinos – Experience Oia’s nightlife at Deilinos, where you can enjoy sunset drinks with unlimited refills, signature cocktails, and shisha in a lively atmosphere.

Boozery: Offering a vibrant atmosphere and a diverse drink menu in Oia, Boozery includes creative cocktails available for in-house enjoyment or takeaway.

Two Brothers Bar: Located in Fira, Two Brothers Bar is a laid-back hangout spot offering 2-for-1 drinks specials. Enjoy cold beers, cocktails, and Santorini wine in a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a casual night out with friends or unwinding after a day of exploring Santorini.
