The Dubrovnik Old Town, an enchanting Croatian town known for its stunning architecture and rich heritage, also has a vibrant culinary scene. From quaint cafes tucked away in narrow alleyways to elegant restaurants with panoramic sea views, Dubrovnik offers a variety of dining options that cater to every type of traveller.
Join me as I navigate the city’s cobblestone streets to uncover its culinary gems. Here are the best places to eat in Dubrovnik in my opinion!
Holy Burek
When in the Balkans, there’s one thing you simply can’t miss: burek! This flaky phyllo pastry, filled with cheese, spinach, and/or meats, is a staple of Balkan cuisine. Traditionally prepared in long rolls, either rounded or lined, burek embodies the region’s rich flavours. Holy Burek is the perfect spot to sample this beloved dish, offering a variety of fillings that make for a satisfying snack or quick meal.
Babić Bakery
Recommended by my Airbnb host on my first trip to Dubrovnik, Babić Bakery quickly became a favourite. With a selection of pizzas, croissants, breads, and burek at affordable prices, it’s an ideal spot for a quick bite. Conveniently located just outside Ploče Gate, it’s a great place to grab something delicious before heading into the city.
Pizzeria Oliva
For a taste of Mediterranean cuisine, Pizzeria Oliva offers a delightful array of pizzas, pastas, appetizers, and salads made from locally sourced ingredients. The prices are average, making it a great option for a casual meal in the heart of Dubrovnik.
Basilico Pizzeria Konoba
Just outside the city walls near Ploče Gate, Basilico Pizzeria Konoba is a charming little restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. We dined outside, and when the evening chill set in, our server kindly brought me a blanket. The vegetable risotto and wine were both excellent, and the personal touch of the owner bringing us magnets as a souvenir made the experience even more memorable.
Restaurant Kopun
Situated at the top of the Jesuit Steps, Restaurant Kopun specializes in traditional Croatian dishes. This is where I finally tried the famous black risotto, and it did not disappoint! While the prices are a bit higher than other spots on this list, the quality of the food and the ambiance make it well worth the splurge. It’s an ideal spot for those looking to enjoy authentic Croatian cuisine in a beautiful setting.
Konoba Koloseum
If you’re looking for a quick and satisfying bite, Konoba Koloseum is a small takeaway spot located in the middle of the Jesuit Steps. For a fun twist, they also serve Game of Thrones “shame”-inspired to-go drinks, making it a quirky stop during your explorations.
Make sure to say hi to Johnny the boss while you’re there!
Refresh Juice Bar
Located right at the bottom of the Jesuit Stairs, Refresh Juice Bar is the go-to spot for smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. Whether you need a healthy pick-me-up or just want to cool off after exploring, this juice bar offers a refreshing break.
Cele Dubrovnik Gourmet & Lounge
For those who enjoy people-watching, Cele Dubrovnik is the perfect place to start your day. Situated on a sidewalk terrace along the Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main street, it offers a front-row seat to the hustle and bustle of the Old Town. The breakfast menu is varied, and considering the prime location, the pricing is fair.
Aroma Gelato
Aroma Gelato, located on the Stradun, is a must-visit for gelato lovers. You can tell it’s the real deal by the way the gelato is stored—kept in metal tins covered with lids, under counter level, ensuring freshness. The flavors are rich and authentic, making it the perfect treat during your stroll through the Old Town.
Sladoledarna
Another gem for gelato enthusiasts is Sladoledarna, conveniently located near Onofrio’s Fountain and Pile Gate. Whether you’re finishing up a day of sightseeing or just craving something sweet, this gelato shop offers a delightful array of flavours to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Whether you’re diving into Croatian classics or grabbing a quick bite, eating your way through Dubrovnik Old Town is an adventure you definitely don’t want to miss. Every meal here is a chance to experience the city’s vibe in the most delicious way possible.
