What comes to mind when you think of Hungarian food? I think of delicious, heavy food that’s full of spice- paprika being the main one!
During my short time in Budapest I had the chance to sample many of Hungary’s staple dishes.
Here are 5 Local foods to try in Budapest!
Goulash
Goulash (gulyas in Hungarian) is the most famous Hungarian dish and is one of the country’s national dishes! It’s a soup/stew made with meat and vegetables, flavoured with paprika(of course) and other spices.
If you can only try one local dish in Budapest, this should be it!

Chicken Paprikash
Named after the spice, Chicken Paprikash is a paprika heavy dish made with a sour cream base. It’s often served with nokedli, which are Hungarian egg-noodle style dumplings.

Langos
Langos is deep-fried dough, traditionally topped with sour cream and shredded cheese. It’s a very popular street food all around Hungary and is often referred to as the “communist pizza”.

Trdelnik
Although Trdelnik isn’t native to Budapest, these Central European chimney cakes can be found all over the city. They’re iced with sugar that’s caramelized while baking and are generally filled with different delicious toppings like whipped cream and ice cream!

Retes
Strudels traditionally filled with apples or.. you got it, cabbage!

*Bonus*
Gelarto Rosa
Although Gelato isn’t a Hungarian dish, stopping at Gelarto Rosa while in Budapest is a must! They serve the cutest rose shaped gelato. This gelato shop can be found right in front of St Stephen’s Basilica.
